The Duomo di San Gimignano, also known as Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta (Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Mary),is a Roman Catholic Collegiate Church and the cathedral of San Gimignano. It is most famous for its incredible murals and paintings, which include works of famous artists such as Taddeo di Bartolo, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Lippo Memmi. In fact, the building is only one of many celebrated buildings that make up the ‘Historic Centre of San Gimignano’, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just find a luxury villa in San Gimignano and visit this amazing cathedral and the astounding historic centre in which it is located. There are few towns so picture-perfect as this and it is well worth exploring.

A visit to a garden is always a great way to refresh while on vacation, particularly on holiday in Tuscany or some other destination where there can be lots of cultural attractions that have a whirlwind of stimuli. Of course, those who find one of our Tuscany villas and spend time in the region should definitely seek out as many of this part of the world’s famous sights and spots as their heart desires but you may also need a bit of a palate cleanser. This is where gardens and parks come in and, luckily, there are also plenty of these to discover in Tuscany as well. Wandering in these spaces, breathing in clean air, surrounding yourself with nature, it not only pleasant and enjoyable but it is also good for the mind, body, and soul. It is a perfect way to recover from intense touristing and the ideal sort of activity to slot into your itinerary as a cushion to more hectic outings and days.

If you have found a villa in San Gimignano, for example, the lovely Giardino Sottovico is exactly this sort of attraction and garden. A wonderful addition to any vacation in San Gimignano, this gem of a botanic garden is home to a charming collection of over 3,000 succulents in a lovely setting that is housed on the former site of an illegal landfill. Built by passionate locals who wanted to reclaim this space in Vico d'Elsa, in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, not far from San Gimignano, the garden was a way of not only transforming an eyesore and polluted part of the countryside but a way of making it into a space that would actually be of service to the physical and psychological well-being of visitors.

A while ago our booking team set off for a visit to the Podere Lo Spadino, a new Tuscan country house close to San Gimignano and one of the favorites of our guests!

A visit to this house is a visit to the Montagnani Family. Because we must tell you that this house was born from an idea, a difficult but a strongly desired wish that the owner Maris had since he was young: his idea to build a house entirely with his own strength and own hands.

According to several researches Maris made and in analyzing some manuscripts left by his ancestors, the Montagnani Family has lived some centuries on the territory where the province of Florence borders the province of Siena, close to San Gimignano. The characteristic symbols of this area are part of the family's coat of arms which can be found in the medieval Town Hall in Certaldo.

There is no shortage of things to see and do and incredible attractions in Tuscany but there are seven designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the region: the historic centre of Florence (initiated in 1982); the Cathedral square of Pisa (1987); the historical centre of San Gimignano (1990); the historical centre of Siena (1995); the historical centre of Pienza (1996); the Val d'Orcia (2004), and the Medici Villas and Gardens (2013).

A charming villa, a stone's throw away from the small tourist town of San Gimignano. Wonderful large pool with a plastic slide for the kids to enjoy, and we had most of our meals in the outside pavilion which was the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset (but be well prepared for mosquitoes!).

The two ground floor attached rooms (separated by glass doors), with bathroom and kitchen has a more spacious and updated feel compared to the upper floor rooms and main kitchen. One bedroom even has a shower cubicle directly in the room, which some found a bit strange. The upper floor rooms and kitchen get quite warm in the summer, but ventilator fans are provided.

If you plan to cook, cutlery, toaster, microwave, pots and pans are available. Expect to purchase everything from BBQ coal, mineral water, herbs, dishwashing tabs, trash bags, and washing maschine detergent. As an unexpected surprise during our two week stay, the cleaners arrived after one week to change the sheets, towels, sweep the floors, and clean the bathrooms; which was much needed.

There is a private pool house next to the pool that is sometimes occupied by the owner if he is in the area, but he is very discreet. We were able to have a tour of his winery as a result.

Giovanna the house caretaker, is able to speak some basic English, or you can speak to Enza, her mother, if you speak Italian. They can arrange a Tuscan dinner for you, prepared in one of the kitchens. It was lovely but way too much food for us (I would suggest to ask them to prepare for half the amount of people than necessary, and don't forget to pack any leftovers if you like, or they will be taken home by the cooks). Expect to pay in cash, directly after.

Our only negative experience of staying here besides the summer mosquitoes, was that the clear pool water turned milky a few days before our departure. The owner tested the water and assured us that it was still safe to swim in, but it felt a little unhygenic as even our swimsuits were stained green. Perhaps this can be better controlled in the future.

Overall it was very relaxing to be able to escape the summer crowds in our little oasis. Some parts of the house my seem a little outdated, but that's just part of the whole experience of staying in an old villa in Tuscany.
