The apartment is located in front of the Accademia Gallery Museum in the San Marco district, a residential neighborhood that takes its name from the church and convent of San Marco, famous in the past for the Pharmacy once managed by the Dominican friars. The inscriptions engraved on stone that list the products on sale are still present on Via Cavour. The nearby Piazza Santissima Annunziata boasts countless stories, including museums, family sagas, works by Brunelleschi including the Spedale degli Innocenti. Under the loggias of the hospital, the famous wheel is still visible where it was possible to anonymously abandon newborns to the care of religious. The Ospedale degli Innocenti, in Florence, was established in 1419 as the first lay institution in the world dedicated to infancy and childhood thanks to donations from Francesco Datini, “the merchant of Prato”. It became home to children abandoned by their families for various reasons, generally extreme poverty and those children then received the surname Innocenti. The prevalence of this name today indicates the importance and scale of the institution's work. However, the building that was home to this service, so ahead of its time, is one of the city's major attractions for more than its social and historical importance; it is also an architectural gem designed by the great Renaissance master, Brunelleschi. Now, a new museum is also being opened on the premises this summer that looks to both the past and the future. If you are interested in history, social issues, culture and art, this sight is a must-see as it manages to cater to all of these interests. A city like Florence is old enough and so rich in history that it has to be at least a little bit haunted. If you are to believe the reports, it appears to actually be rather haunted, indeed. From windows left open for a ghost still awaiting her lover to piazzas still haunted by executions that happened long ago, there are many buildings and spaces around the city that are said to be plagued by the dead. The name comes from the Italian word for “offices” which is what the building was intended to house when it was first constructed.

Great location across the street from David. In fact, maybe a little too close if you want the living room quiet from 08:30-10:00. Noise from the crowd waiting for tickets didn't reach the bedroom, though, and they were interesting to watch. The washer took a little getting used to, even after we let in the repair man to fix a leak. Also had to get used to the sit-tub/shower. Had a low shelf that you could sit on that sloped to the drain level. Hard to stand in since it was hard to fit both feet on the same level. The slope between the levels was slippery.
