However, by the 3rd century BC it had become merely a Roman province and not one of the 12 leading cities of a federation. Under Charlemagne it was made into a country in its own right. Then its fortune took a turn again and it became a battlefield between Florence and Siena until the tensions between those two great cities and kingdoms calmed in the 19th century.

Lake Trasimeno is one of the most beautiful lakes on the Italian peninsula. It lies just over the border of Tuscany near Cortona, and dominates the northwestern part of Umbria.

The lake is surrounded on three sides by the hills that are so common throughout the region, with a lowland stretching out from the west of the lake. Olive groves dot the hills surrounding the area, and hills nearest Tuscany also grow many grapes, along with other fruits and vegetables. The climate here is warmer that the other hills surrounding the lake, as they are at a lower elevation. The towns on the lake are all rather small in population. Castiglione del Lago is probably the most well known as its the largest peninsula onto the lake and has the largest shoreline by far. The water of Trasimeno remains very clean, with very few large farms and a small population living on the lake it has been able to avoid some of the modern problems.

Groot sfeervol huis, prachtig en rustig gelegen in de heuvels nabij het Trassimenomeer. Geweldig uitzicht vanaf het terras en vanuit de slaapkamers. Vriendelijke ontvangst van eigenaar/beheerder die op hetzelfde terrein woont. Ruime keuken, apparatuur is wel wat verouderd: tijdens ons verblijf stopte de vaatwasser ermee. Geen elektrisch koffiezetapparaat aanwezig. Gelukkig konden we in een appartement ernaast de vaatwasser gebruiken. Kamers zijn ruim en schoon. Opgedekte bedden bij aankomst en handdoeken beschikbaar.
Parkeerplaats voor gasten is wat krap voor meerdere auto's, waardoor keren lastig was. Het was eigenlijk niet mogenlijk de Parkeerplaats achteruit uit te rijden.
Communicatie met eigenaar verliep wat moeizaam vanwege taalbarrière; Gelukkig hebben we Google Translate. Al met al zeer fijne dagen gehad.
