A Roman centurion, Pantius, received many hectares of land for his retirement and built his 'Aula' (house) on a hill. In Latin, Pantius' house was known as 'the Pantius-Aula' (the house of Pantius). With the centuries, Pantius-Aula's name was altered to become 'Panzalla', the current name of the castle. During the Middle Ages, the property came into the possession of the Buondelmonti family, and the house was transformed into one of the many family castles. The oldest remaining part of the building was constructed in this period and still stands today. In the course of the centuries, the castle history has been intertwined with that of the 'Florentine Republic', then with the 'Tuscan Grand-Duchy', and finally, with the 'Kingdom of Italy'. Most recently, the castle was owned by the counts, Miari Pelli Fabbroni, who gave the house the name 'Villa Fabbroni'. The Fabbroni family renovated the villa in nineteenth century style and made it their hunting cottage. When Florence was the capital of Italy, King Vittorio Emanuele II was a guest at the villa. The land surrounding the castle was rich with game and fruitful vineyards, which produced a wine very similar to 'Bordeaux'. Situated in the oldest part of the villa where wine was once fermented in large chestnut barrels is the restaurant, 'Villa Fabbroni'. The restaurant is reserved exclusively for our guests. Swimming-pool 10 x 5 mt large; depth 1,5 mt all over. The pool is open from 1 May until 30 September. The specialties of our region, including homemade pasta, roasts, and game, are served to our guests in the ambience of a typical Tuscan wine cellar with arched brick ceilings and stone walls. Discover the flavours of another era in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is open for dinner on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. During the rest of the week, the restaurant is open upon request (minimum 10 people). Pizza Tuesday evening. The Villa seemed to ooze history and the apartment we stayed in, Il Padronale, was absolutely perfect for our party of 8. The walks from the Villa were exhilarating and we would love to return for a longer stay next time. Would you recommend this property to a friend? Yes Adrian H. Henfield (United Kingdom) La Fattoria 5 /5 Excellent Villa Review Rating Details Great place for family get together or just for two. A hard place to find but once there it was just lovely. Not posh but comfortable and homey. We were grateful that the restaurant was open each night we were there and took advantage of the amazing food each night. Excellent value and fresh, great tasting food. No choice, just four courses served to you. Although we had some picky eaters, everyone cleaned their plates! Children can have pasta and dessert for 5 euro ....... Perfect. Plus their adequate house wine is 5 euro a bottle ...... Their own vineyard. We couldn't recommend this more highly. Sergio and Stefano were fantastic and very helpful..... Nothing too much of a problem. One of our party was gluten intolerant and they made him amazing food every night. He has never been treated so well. So, yes, stay here ........ I would again. Although I said it was far away up a hill we still did day trips to Forence, Lucca and Sienna and also took advantage of the walking trails all around the property. Would you recommend this property to a friend? Yes Gwyneth B. Southampton (Bermuda) Il Padronale 4 /5 Very Good Villa Review Rating Details The Apartment is grand and well furnished in antique style. We had a very enjoyable stay. My only minor quibbles were: a) All the showers lacked a shelf to place toileteries while showering...this can and should be easily remedied b) The showers had good pressure, but the shower heads were very fine, so that the stream of water was very painful (like needles!) the shower heads at Pergolo were perfect and perhaps the ones at Padronale should be changed c) From the internet description, it wasnt actually clear that the house is so far from any civilization or transport links! San Polo is 4-5km away on an uneven dirt road, which was a bit disconcerting coming up at dusk the first time....its a bit far to get quick groceries (and the shops are open short hours). There are very few transport options at San Polo (only 2 buses a day - early morn and evening to florence) so if any part of the party of guests that want to go off independently from the rest of the group needs to have a separate car. Would you recommend this property to a friend? Yes Shreelal B. Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) More Guest Reviews Il Pergolo 4 /5 Very Good Villa Review Rating Details The appt is cozy and enjoyable. It was a bit of a shock to get there though as its 4km off an unmarked dirt road with no lights, so very hard to arrive at dusk. The booking didnt prepare us for the relative remoteness of the property, which meant that each family needed to have their own car to be independent (which we didnt) - wasnt advisable to use a large van as we did on that road. The transport links from San Polo were very poor to Firenze. The property had good rooms and kitchen. My suggestion is for the showers to be fitted with small corner shelves to hold toileteries Pergolo was decently furnished (not as grand as Padronale) However, the shared space (Kitchen and Living) could be considerably better as the sofa there was in a very poor and ratty condition and should be replaced. A coffee table could be added. Just these simple things would give a much nicer feel to the room The internet was inaccessible in this part of the house. It would be a good investment (EUR50?) to have a repeater or internet signal amplifier around Pergolo. Would you recommend this property to a friend? Yes Shreelal B. La Loggia 6 Sleeps 3 Bedrooms 3 Bathrooms Il Pergolo 8 Sleeps 4 Bedrooms 4 Bathrooms Raoul 7 Sleeps 4 Bedrooms 4 Bathrooms Property Description Panzalla Castle has remote origins dating back to ancient Rome. WIRELESS internet connection free of charge (normal speed) at the outdoor areas of the property (so not inside the apartments), please carry your portable!
