Il Borgo di Gugena 7 km from Dicomano: Il Borgo di Gugena is situated on the hill, approx 450m above the sea level in the National Park of the Casentinesi Forest, in unspoilt area where you can still find roes, deers and foxes. Garden has 6000 sq metres and is partially enclosed. The pool has a salt purification system and swimming wave machine. The Village of Gugena offers its guests a hiking service with a walking guide (extra). The excursions within the 20,000 square metre estate are planned according to the abilities of guests, either starting from the village or nearby. The excursions are enhanced by information on flora, flauna, farming and forestry and local traditions. Inside the Borgo, separated and independent from the main house, there is an annex where the owners can occasionally go and stay. Working farm "Il Borgo di Gugena", 450 m a.s.l., renovated in 2006. 5 km from the centre of San Godenzo, 30 km from the centre of Lago di Bilancino, 40 km from the centre of Firenze, in a secluded, quiet, sunny position on top of a hill. Have you been dreaming about a vacation in Tuscany? Well, now is a perfect time to plan a trip as many new direct flights to the region have been added!

Traditionally, many choosing to holiday in the area had to fly into Bologna but Pisa and Florence are actually the two major international airports within the region itself and might be more convenient arrival points depending on where you will be staying. When my family decided that they wanted to visit a winery the very next day, late in the afternoon, I spent a rather panicked evening researching somewhere that suited their rather demanding stipulations and would be able to take us on such short notice.

I eventually (after much hair pulling and cursing under my breath) found Agriturismo Frascole and saw they did daily tours and tastings and were about a half hour drive from our villa. I rang early the next morning and they were able to take us at 3, as I requested. Little did I know how fortuitously excellent a selection it would prove to have been.

The road up to the winery was not easy. However, Frascole is located near the charming town of Dicomano, high up in Tuscan Apennines in the middle of an unspoiled area of natural beauty. The historic buildings, surrounding fields of the vineyard and incredible views over the mountains and valleys below were truly breathtaking.

Tuscany is a photogenic place with picture-perfect views and attractions around every corner. From the rolling hills topped by medieval villages and the valleys filled with vineyards, to the ideal Renaissance town of Pienza and staggering architectural gems of Florence, there are all sorts of must-see sights that you'll want to see with you own eyes and then capture on film forever.

Some of these things are well-known and obvious but there are some that you might never heard of before. This author has chosen some of her favourites to share with you; some of Tuscany's most photogenic sights and picturesque spots that you must track down!

1. The hills surrounding Dicomano

I recently wrote about the excellent Agriturismo Frascole, a winery in the Tuscan Apennines, where I had a wonderful day tasting wine with my family.

Italy is famous for her food and for her food festivals. No matter where you go in the country or when you visit, you're bound to stumble upon a food festival if you look around for a bit. These festivals can celebrate specific local produce, local dishes, harvests, feasts, saint's days, other holidays, historic events, and more. And whether any sort of festival or event is specifically about food or not, food is always central to Italian celebrations! If you're looking for excellent, authentic, inexpensive dining experience while you holiday in Tuscany, these are the places to go!

Tuscany is well-known for her rich culinary heritage and scene and, as a result, is home to an endless list of local and famous food festivals. These festivals honour saints, celebrate local specialities, commemorate historic events, and highlight seasonal harvests and dishes and often have one dish or product that is the star of the show (though you’ll find plenty of other excellent things to taste as well). As a result of the quantity of these festivals and the long list of different specialities and products that are honoured, those with preferences for specific foods will very likely be able to find a celebration dedicated to exactly the thing they love.

So, for example, if you’re a peach fan, you’ll be well served by browsing our Tuscany Villas and booking a vacation rental in Florence come late August to mid-September, when the Queen Peach will be reigning!

Well, either way, it might be an idea to book your holiday rental in Tuscany for September instead! Not only can the weather remain pretty warm (but not too hot, either!) and sunny for the first couple weeks of the month but prices will begin to lower and tourist crowds will begin to thin, making September a great choice for many travellers.
