The Opening Of Florence's Magic Gucci Garden

Gucci Garden
During the summer, I was incredibly sad to find the Gucci Museum in Florence closed on my one day in the city. The whole building – museum, store and cafe – was under construction and closed for a relatively long period of time; if I had done my research properly, I would have known. Yet, it was all for a good reason! Said construction has resulted in an impossibly beautiful building that is a must-see for any fashion lovers who have found a luxury villa in Florence!

On the 10th of January 2018, under the vision of Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s creative director, the museum reopened. Located inside the Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence's Piazza Signoria that dates to 1337, the Gucci Museum has been open since 2011 and is spread across several floors. Now called the Gucci Garden, it encompasses a boutique that stocks exclusive pieces, an exhibition curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, a rather special gift shop and the Gucci Osteria, which is manned by the three-Michelin-starred chef, Massimo Bottura.

Vibrant, colourful and beautiful, there is much to see at every turn, there is a series of themed rooms. The exhibition space spans across two floors and begins with the ‘Guccification’ room where the iconic Double G motif is explored right up to its recent transgressive transformation by artist Trouble Andrew for Gucci Ghost. The ‘Paraphernalia’ room, meanwhile, is dedicated to signature codes and symbols that define Gucci’s identity and the ‘Cosmorama’ room explores the historical Gucci customer and the evolution of the Crest. On the second floor is ‘De Rerum Natura’, two rooms that recall natural history museums and explore Michele’s curiosity for animals and gardens. The journey then ends in ‘Ephemera’, a room that composes landscapes of objects, videos and memorabilia that retrace the history of the House. Additionally, there is a small, red-velvet tented cinema auditorium, featuring a preview of Zeus Machine/Phoenix, a short film by the ZAPRUDER group of filmmakers.

You could spend a whole day in the new Gucci Museum, wandering the exhibitions, eating in the restaurant and shopping in the store (if you have the cash to spare!) and it really is a highlight for any fashion lovers visiting the city. Even if you can't quite afford the full Gucci lifestyle, you can get a taste of it the next time you find yourself in Florence.
