Funerary Monument of Margaret of Brabant, Pisano

The Palazzo Strozzi, located between Piazza Strozzi and Via Tornabuoni, is a stunning and influential example of Renaissance palace architecture and, while no longer home to the Strozzi family, does host a rich programme of events and exhibitions today. From the 25th of September 2026 until the 24th of January 2027, it will be home to a rather intriguing new exhibition called, Broken – the power of Fragments.

Celebrating fragments throughout the history of art, from antiquity to the contemporary period, it shows us all how these objects are more than a broken part of a whole and the incredible influence that they have had. One of the key exhibitions currently on display in the city, it is a must-see for art-lovers who book a vacation rental in Florence over the next few months and another great reason to make the architectural wonder that is the Palazzo Strozzi a stop on your itinerary of the Birthplace of the Renaissance...

Taking place in the courtyard and on the piano nobile daily from 10am to 8pm and on Thursdays until 11pm, Broken was organised by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, where the exhibition will go on to be displayed between March and June 2027.

It showcases over eight works of art and artefacts from some of the most important museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London, and the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City. The exhibition is curated by C.D. Dickerson III, director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Art, Andrew Sears, the assistant curator of northern European paintings (both from the National Gallery of Art), in collaboration with Arturo Galansino, the Director General of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.

The works on display truly span the breadth of time and space with pieces from ancient Egypt, classical Greece, pre-modern cultures of present-day Mexico, Mali, Peru, and Cambodia, the Etruscans, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Impressionists, right through to the present day. Great masters such as Giovanni Pisano, Michelangelo, Rodin, and more are showcased alongside anonymous artists of the past and contemporary geniuses working today such as Louise Bourgeois, Huma Bhabha, Robert Gober, Francesco Vezzoli, and Danh Võ. In the courtyard, a new installation by the Dutch-Belgian artist Mark Manders that was commissioned for the space is on display and is an exclusive of the exhibition.

Displaying the fragment as an autonomous object in its own right that is capable of preserving traces of memory and transformation, that can be a choice or tell stories in its destruction, these pieces of sculptural works reflect artistic practice, history, natural disasters, wars, revolutions, vandalism, and more. They become an, “instrument of knowledge and imagination, a living presence that continues to question our present,” as noted in the Palazzo Strozzi’s own description of the exhibition on their website.

So, if you have booked a holiday rental in Florence and are planning on being in the city over the course of the next few months, come and take in this extraordinary showcase of incredible works from all over the world, all throughout time, and some of the greatest masters in the history of art while considering all of it from a slightly different perspective...
