If you are familiar with panforte, the Tuscan Christmas cake, then thinking of it probably conjures cosy and relaxing images of indulging in the treat with twinkling lights and festive music in the background, a hot drink or some dessert wine close at hand – all of which is ideally enjoyed while staying in one of our amazing vacation rentals in Tuscany during the season. However, if you book a villa in Pienza for the Holidays and are looking to enjoy local tradition, then you have a free pass to get involved in a food fight...
The annual panforte tournament, or Torneo del Gioco del Panforte, is a highly anticipated event in beautiful Pienza (famously designed to be the ideal Renaissance town) that sees teams take turns tossing Siena’s beloved treat onto special tables. The winners are those who manage to throw it closest to the edge without it falling off. This game is, no doubt, very familiar to many who have gone to university as it closely resembles plenty of drinking games enjoyed by young people and is an opportunity to brush off old skills while having fun in the area over the Christmas holidays.
Taking place from the 26th to the 30th of December 2026, this 24th edition of the Torneo del Panforte will take place in the Logge del Palazzo Comunale and is run by the Associazione del Panforte. On the 2nd and the 3rd of January 2027 at 3pm each day, meanwhile, there will be a version of the event held for kids, allowing your little ones to get involved in the unique fun as well – as long as they don’t develop the habit of playing with their food! After the event, the sweets are eaten and donated and while they may have been put to the test, they will still taste just as good.
Panforte, for those unfamiliar, originates in Tuscany and while it is not just a Sienese tradition, it is deeply connected to the medieval gem that is Siena, another beautiful town of the region. It is similar to a fruitcake and is made with nuts, honey, sugar and spices. Steeped in legend and entwined with the history of the region, there are many different recipes and versions, including a chocolate variety. It is also available throughout the year but is very deeply connected to Christmas and is commonly served at this time of the year.
Those who love festive treats, therefore, should book a villa in Siena to experience this beloved sweet in its spiritual home. However, if you want to savour it and enjoy the unique tradition of the panforte tournament then you are better off booking a holiday rental in Pienza and joining in the fun with the locals this festive season. And if you just so happen to win, then be sure to get in touch and let us know...
