The origins of Capalbio are really ancient and the Bronze Age tombs that have been discovered in the area show that it has been settled since at least that period. More solid evidence of the history of the town dates back to 806 AD, when Charlemagne donated Capalbio to the Tre Fontane Abbey in Rome. In the 13th century, it became the property of the Aldobrandeschi family and then the Republic of Siena. It was during this time that the wealth of the town increased rather dramatically and a large amount of building projects and public works were undertaken.
This period is still visible today in the charming medieval town: particularly in the ancient crenelated walls that were rebuilt by the Sienese, which offer stunning views over the Maremma area, and the Fortress of Aldobrandeschi. The Collacchioni Palace, meanwhile, is another architectural gem of the city that dates to the Renaissance period.

Other highlights and must-sees of the town include the 12th-13th century Church of San Nicola, with its Romanesque capitals and Renaissance frescoes; the Oratory of the Providence and its 16th century frescoes attributed to the school of Pinturicchio; the Capalbio Cinema International Short Film Festival; the famous Garden of Tarot Cards, with its large sculptures depicting the 22 Major Arcanes of the tarot cards created by the French artist Niki de Sante Phalle; Lake of Burano; and over 12 kilometers of long sandy beaches and crystal clear water. Capalbio is renowned across Italy for its enviable beauty and for retaining “la sua suggestiva atmosfera medioevale” (its evocative medieval atmosphere). There is much to see and do but also a relaxed atmosphere and picture-perfect beaches that make it the perfect place for the beach holiday of your dreams in Tuscany, whether you're interested in adventure or recharging your batteries.
