
Giorgio Vasari was born in Arezzo, Tuscany in July 1511. He grew up with a keen interest in the arts and had quite a talent for painting, writing, architectural design and history research. In 1529 he travelled to Rome where he studied the masters of the Renaissance.

Finally Vasari started exploring the world of art history and decided to document the life and times of the greatest Italian masters of the arts.

This book is called ‘Lives of the most eminent painters, sculptors and architects’ which became his most famous legacy. It’s considered to be one of the best art history resources in the world and earned Vasari the reputation as being the first ‘art historian’.
He writes the life stories of masters like Da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli in an engaging and story-like fashion. He mixed in interesting stories and legends of these masters into the mix which makes for a very interesting read.
There’s a superb museum built in Vasari’s honour that was his home house in Arezzo which is certainly worth a stroll around if you’re passing through the area.
