The early life of Filippo Brunelleschi is shrouded in mystery through lack of documentation but in his early teenage years we learn that he was trained to be a goldsmith and sculptor. He excelled in this trade also but due to losing out in a commission to design the bronze relief for the doors of Florence’s Baptistery against Lorenzo Ghiberti, Brunelleschi decided to focus his talents elsewhere.

He was good friend with the master bronze sculptor Donatello, and both became inspired to work in classical styles after visiting the ancient architectural ruins of Rome.

Filippo Brunelleschi was the man who rediscovered the drawing technique called linear perspective. This is a brilliant technique used by artists all over the world today to correctly draw objects in perspective to make them appear closer or further away in the distance by use of vanishing points.

The Greeks and Romans practised this method but sadly knowledge of it was lost during the Middle Ages.

Why not visit the tomb of the great Filippo Brunelleschi who died in 1446 and was buried in an engraved tomb with the cathedral of Florence. His wealth of contributions to the worlds of artistry, architecture and engineering will forever be endeared by those who recognised his brilliance.
