
The tiny town of Capannori near Lucca in Tuscany has risen to great heights in its determined and successful journey to become the greenest place in Europe! It has become a shining advocate in Italy’s Zero Waste Movement, an initiative to help dramatically reduce the amount of waste that each household produced.
It also endeavours to develop ingenious ways to recycle and cut down on packaging coming into the household. The goal was to find a cleaner and more efficient solution to waste disposal than incineration or landfill sites.

The residents of Capannori worked brilliantly together to make this happen by firstly separating their waste into separate bags for recycling. Food waste was added to special waste disposals which was then turned into rich compost and sold...making more money to reinvest into other green schemes.
Upcycling initiatives took place across the town of Capannori such as classes on sewing, upholstery and woodwork to help people reuse unwanted item and turn them into something useful for themselves or the community.

Local small businesses got on board with a scheme whereby locals could bring in their jars and baskets to be refilled with oil, pasta, vegetables and other household products. There’s even special milk stations set up here where people can come to pay a reduced price for milk refills and farmers get a much higher price for their product! This cut down dramatically on plastic and glass containers and helped boost the town’s terrific goal to be almost 100% green!
The people of Capannori had their water system improved to make the drinking water more pleasant which in turn cut down on the demand for bottled water in the area.
