A holiday to Tuscany wouldn't be complete without a visit to some of the the 14th century artworks created by the famous painter, Leonardo da Vinci, many of which are located in art galleries in Florence city!

This talented Renaissance artist helped to put Florence on the map during the ‘Enlightened Era’ and tourists are guaranteed to enjoy a wonderful cultural experience as they follow in his footsteps! Those wishing to spend some of their holiday to Tuscany in or around the city of Florence have plenty of stylish apartments and comfortable holiday villas to rent, where they can relax after a few days of stimulating art appreciation.

Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 in the charming town of Vinci in the province of Florence. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour around a lovely museum here called ‘Museo Leonardiano’ which contains some of his many inventions, drawings and notes. Also worth a visit is Casa di Leonardo, the farmhouse nearby where he was born and raised.

He was the illegitimate child of Piero da Vinci and a peasant woman called Caterina and grew up to be a young man of immense curiosity and innovation. He was educated in the workshop of Verrocchio who was a famous painter in Florence but dabbled in many other endeavours in his spare time including engineering, music and inventing gadgets.

Tourists can see one of Leonardo’s first professional paintings that was created in collaboration with his master. It’s called ‘The Baptism of Jesus’ and is located in the Uffizi Galley in Piazza della Signoria, Florence city. Even then, the young man displayed distinct characteristics in his style that were to contribute to later masterpieces. Leonardo also worked in prominent workshops under the guidance of master painters like Ghirlandaio, Perugino and Botticelli.
The Vitruvian Man
The Uffizi Gallery has a dedicated space to Leonardo da Vinci which includes his other great artworks like ‘Annunciation’, ‘Adoration of the Magi’ and a self portrait. The Galleria dell’ Accademia beside Piazza San Marco also house famous works of da Vinci’s including ‘Vetruvian Man’ and some of his scientific drawings, notes and inventions. Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria displays his detailed representation of ‘The Battle of Anghiari’.

Some of da Vinci’s most famous pieces, including ‘The Last Supper’ and ‘The Mona Lisa’ are located outside of Tuscany. His fresco of the last supper can be seen in the region of Milan in the church of Santa Maria and is mentioned in greater detail in a related article. The Mona Lisa is displayed in the Louvre museum in Paris, France.
