We often discuss the Tuscan Coast as a perfect holiday destination that many international visitors might be less familiar with than some of the other, more famous coastal regions of the country. Among them, the lovely Cala Violina is one of the most famous and beloved.

Why It Is Special

Cala Violina, known as the, “musical beach,” is located in the Maremma, halfway between Follonica and Punta Ala, in the municipal territory of Scarlino. Set within the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve, the little beach is made up of white sand lapped by the emerald waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Amongst the white sand, there are tiny quartz crystals that make a unique sound at a particular frequency – between 500 and 2,500 hertz – that sounds somewhat like a violin when people walk on the sand or the water washes over it. Due to the enclosed shape of the cove in which the beach is found and its remote location, this sound is more prominent and obvious than it might be elsewhere. As a result, the beach gained its poetic name, the so-called, “violin cove.”

Presenting a very traditional exterior with a chic and stylish polish to the interiors, Villa Poggio La Croce is a stone villa in Tuscany with a charming terracotta roof set within lovely gardens and nestled amongst the rolling green hills of the Chianti wine region. Located in the countryside but just 2km (1 mile) from the town of Radda In Chianti and 19km (12 miles) from Greve In Chianti, it is also within easy day-trip distance of Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, and Arezzo. Villa Poggio La Croce boasts a private pool and can sleep up to 12 guests comfortably in six bedrooms with three bathrooms.

While other stretches of the coastline of the boot of Italy are famous specifically as holiday destinations for dreamy seaside getaways – many imagine the picturesque cliff-side villages of the Cinque Terre, lazy days of luxury on the Amalfi Coast, and the increasingly popular coastal towns of Apulia – Tuscany also has plenty to offer those who want sun and fun by the sea. One generally tends to associate Florence with the Renaissance – and for good reason, as it is widely considered the birthplace of the Renaissance – rather than with any other time or movement in art. Of course, the city was a hub for art before this period and continues to be to this very day. For art-lovers who book a villa in Florence, there is certainly a wide range of museums, galleries, and spaces in which to enjoy works art from all throughout history. Those, however, who have a fondness for the Impressionists but who also want to experience the great art city of Florence, with its particular wealth of Renaissance wonders, will be happy to note that a spring break in Florence this year will allow for both!

Until the 4th of May 2025, the Museo degli Innocenti will be hosting an exhibition called Impressionists in Normandy, that features the work of some of the best-known and well-loved artists of the period including Monet, Bonnard, Boudine, Corot, Courbet, Villon, Renoir, and Delacroix. With over 70 works on display, this wonderful exhibition comes 150 years after the birth of this artistic movement in the city that birthed another of the great and influential periods of art.
