Baccalà is the Italian word for salted cod, a food that has a long history in Europe going back hundreds of years. There are various recipes involving baccalà from lots of different countries and within Italy, in particular.

In Tuscany, the most famous and typical of these dishes comes from Livorno and is called Baccalà alla Livornese. If you have found a vacation rental in Livorno, it is one of the key regional dishes that you should try – particularly if you are a foodie, you really won't want to miss out on the local flavour!

5. Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a wine area located in the Province of Livorno that has become internationally known since 1974, when, in an event organised by Decanter, a 6-year-old Sassicaia won over an assortment of Bordeaux wines.

In the last post in this series, here are two more of Tuscany's most unique and best theme parks. While the region may be better known for its cuisine and culture and while there may be plenty of museums, galleries, churches, architectural gems, landmarks and restaurants to be discovered, there are also adventures to be had.

Cavallino Matto, near Livorno, is Tuscany’s biggest amusement park. Originally set up in 1967 as a stables that offered pony trekking throughout the vast pine woods near the beach of Livorno during the summer.

Called ‘Parco Gulliver’, it also included crazy golf, ping pong tables, a bar, slides, swings and was free to enter. Over the years, this business grew and expanded until it was the biggest amusement park in the region.

In 2006, Cavallino Matto was purchased by the Manfredini family, who work in the funfair business, and has only grown larger since then.

3. Isole

Isole is a striking semi-detached countryside property, surrounded by fields that is located in a quiet panoramic position on top of a hill, 5 km from the sea, in Livorno. Painted a bright red, it makes for a rather arresting sight against the lush green fields, blue skies and glimmering azure seas in the background. Rustic and comfortable inside, the property has similarly bright interiors that are charmingly typically Tuscan.

We all have memories of blissful childhood holidays by the sea, right? Even if it was just the nearest coast for a couple of days, or even a few hours, it was the highlight of the summer. As such, there is still something special about seaside vacations, isn't there?

The fresh air, building sandcastles, splashing about and messing around in the water, going for a proper swim to cool down, the smell of the salty water clinging to your hair hours later, warm sand between your toes, meals quickly followed by ice-cream and eaten hungrily after playing around; there's nothing else quite like it.
