Monte San Savino is a beautiful little Tuscan town located halfway between Siena and Arezzo and each year, it is home to a delicious food festival: the Sagra della Porchetta.

Food festivals are a penny a dozen in Italy with most towns having at least one but this one, in particular, promises some good eating. A well-known and popular event, it centres around suckling pig and is celebrated each September with a big festival and market where you can try the star of the show (the pig) or sample countless other local products and dishes.

2015 is the Year of Archaeology in Tuscany and, due to this there are many events taking place which celebrate the history of the region. Each summer in Tuscany, there are countless food festivals, one in almost every town and something on somewhere in the region each weekend.

This traditional passion for food and the commemoration of the rich historical heritage of Tuscany are being combined this summer in a series of special events, tours, shows, exhibits and dinners.

Every year in the evening of the second last Saturday of June and the afternoon of the first Sunday of September, the town of Arezzo in Tuscany holds an event called la Giostra del Saracino, or simply il Saracino, or The Joust of the Saracen in English.

Born in Medieval times as a military training exercise, it is now a great festival in the city which brings together tradition, history, food, music and costumes.

Spend a delightful few hours in the town of Quarrata in Pistoia province. This town is actually made up of seventeen frazioni including the village of Casini and the hamlet of Olmi.

2014 marks the two hundred year anniversary of the landing of the French Captain Napoleon Bonaparte on Elba Island.

On May 4th 1814, Napoleon was sent here in exile but managed to create quite a wonderful life here during his ten month stay. He did great work in transforming Elba island into a commercial hub and vastly improved the education, government, Industrial and transport systems here.

He was endeared by the people and this Bicentennial marks that in a ten month series of exciting events!
