Great Reasons To Book A Villa In Lucca & Experience Her Magic

Dining out in Lucca

Tuscany is a place that can feel inherently magical – with its legendary rolling green hills bathed in golden light at sunset or draped in fog in the early morning, the cities and towns that seem frozen in time, the gardens dotted with statues that feel as though they might come to life, and so much more – but if you are looking for your next destination then we put forward Lucca for your consideration. This ancient walled city is one of those that can seem as though it has remained utterly untouched by time but it is also a place filled with unique curiosities and impossibly beautiful wonders. Views of Lucca

The Walls

Many medieval towns in Tuscany have remnants of old city walls, with sections that even date back further to the Romans, but Lucca is one of the rare examples that remains encircled by its old walls. Not only does it present the city as a romantic and pretty place that feels outside of time but the walls of Lucca are particularly impressive. High and very wide, they circle the city and provide panoramic views over the lush surrounding scenery of the Tuscan landscape as well as of the town itself. Walking and cycle paths follow the entire course and many visitors will take the chance to do the whole route to best admire the magical views. This is a great way to introduce yourself to the city and a wonderful walk for those who love to get out and stretch their legs.

In the centre of Lucca

The Historic Centre

Lucca has an especially picturesque historic core with lots of winding little alleys, pretty piazze like the famous Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, cobbled streets, houses with flower boxes and painted shutters, and endless other photogenic sights like interesting statues, beautiful churches, wisteria growing over a wall, and more. It is truly a place to wander, get a little lost, soak in the open-air museum quality of the place, stop for a spritz or a craft beer (the De Cervesia group of three rare craft beer venues in Tuscany are all located in the city), shop in little boutiques, and just fall in love with your surroundings. For those who love a potter or discovering hidden gems, a vacation rental in Lucca and time spent dissecting the city is sure to reward!

Torre Guinigi

The Towers

In the past, noble families in several towns in Tuscany would compete to show off their wealth, power, and influence by building increasingly tall towers. Most of these are no longer standing but there are several examples that remain in Lucca. Among them, the 14th-century, 45-metre-high Torre Guinigi is particularly magical as it is topped by a cluster of seven helm oak trees. This very special rooftop garden’s original purpose is unknown, although we do have records that other towers once had the same decorative crown, but the charge of around €5 to climb the tower, experience the trees, and admire the views is well worth it!

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro

The Mummified Saint

Italy loves her saints and is home to many so-called incorruptible remains. Inside the Basilica of San Frediano you’ll find the mummified body of St Zita, the patron saint of Lucca. She’s also the patron saint of servants, household staff, and lost keys so if you’re prone to losing yours, it might be worth stopping by, paying the nominal fee, and saying a prayer to St Zita.

The Comic Book Festival

Lucca, as a picturesque and historic city, might not be the location you might imagine for a comic book and popular culture festival but, each year, its cobbled streets are walked by cosplayers, actors from major franchises, creators of beloved shows and books, and thousands and thousands of fans during Lucca Games and Comics. Adding further colour to the streets of Lucca, this annual event is usually held in October and is the biggest event of its kind in Europe and the second in the world after Comiket in Tokyo. Running now for over 60 years, it is an incredible event and one more magical surprise about this extraordinary city. So, find your holiday rental in Lucca and be sure to leave room for your best cosplay look in your suitcase!
