The grand cathedrals of Tuscany’s cities are generally an extraordinary collection of buildings, often with ancient origins, additions throughout various periods and architectural styles, contributions by named and famous architects, gilded interiors full of stunning objects, and artworks by the likes of Michelangelo, Giotto, and more. Those, therefore, who find a villa in Tuscany and visit any given town or city should always make time to pop into the local cathedral but, in particular, if you book a vacation rental in Siena, we really recommend a visit. This absolutely gorgeous church has lots of remarkable details touched by famous and beyond talented hands. Here are just five of its highlights that make it a must-see for those on holiday in Siena.

1. The floors
While the soaring vaulted ceiling, dome, and tall striped columns direct the eyes upwards upon entering the church, we also recommend looking down as you enter Siena’s cathedral – if you are visiting between August and October. The incredible marble carpet floor was designed by multiple Renaissance masters and is an elaborate masterpiece with symbolic scenes including the Wheel of Fortune, the She-Wolf of Siena with the emblems of the confederate cities, the Four Virtues as well as narratives from the Bible such as the Story of King David by Domenico di Niccolò dei Cori and Paolo di Martino’s Victory of Joshua and Victory of Samson over the Philistines. Covered for their protection for most of the year, they are only uncovered after the Palio dell'Assunta for around 6 to 10 weeks each year. Although, some areas near the entrance can be viewed throughout the rest of the year.
2. The Michelangelo sculptures
Four early works by the impossibly famous Michelangelo can also be found in the cathedral. Set into the Piccolomini Altarpiece, by the entrance to the Piccolomini Library, in the four lower niches, are works completed by the young Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. These are figures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Gregory (thought to have been completed with the help of an assistant), and Saint Pius. Showcasing his mastery of drapery and the human form, these works give visitors an opportunity to see early examples by the man who would go on to become one of the most famous artists in the history of the world.

3. Other sculptural works by great Masters
However, Michelangelo is not the only big name in sculpture represented at the cathedral. In fact, those interested in sculpture will find that this church is basically an extraordinary sculptural museum in addition to being a place of worship. In addition to Michelangelo, Siena’s cathedral boasts works by Bernini, Donatello, and Jacopo della Quercia as well as great local sculptors throughout the centuries such as Tino di Camaino and Neroccio di Bartolomeo de' Landi.
4. The creatures of the exterior
Step outside and examine the lavish exterior of the building, however, and you will discover a wealth of interesting and impressive sculptural figures to find and admire. From gargoyles to Giovanni Pisano and his assistants’ figures of prophets, philosophers and apostles, this impressive array is mad up almost exclusively of copies but the originals can be readily found and studied at closer range in the Crypt of the Statues in the cathedral's museum.

5. The library
Previously mentioned, the adjoining Piccolomini Library is another true treasure at the cathedral. Decorated elaborately with painted frescoes and housing an incredible collection of illustrated manuscripts and books, it is an utterly breathtaking space where the talents of endless artists are on display in one room.
So, if you are enjoying a stay at one of our villas in Siena be sure to set aside some time to see her stunning cathedral and all of the extraordinary artistic treasures within as well as decorating the exterior.
