Right now, if you head on holiday to stay in one of our amazing villas in Tuscany, especially if you find a vacation rental in the Maremma area or a holiday rental in the Val D’Orcia, you will likely encounter the incredible sight of fields upon fields of golden sunflowers. Blooming from around the middle of July until around the middle of August, these stunning flowers may not be native to the area but are now actually a symbol for Tuscany.

Brought to Europe from Central America in the 18th century and increasingly popular since then, sunflowers now flood the valleys and fields of various parts of the Val d'Orcia and Maremma, especially near the coast and in areas like the hamlet of Pian d'Alma and around the town of Castiglione della Pescaia. Like any crop, they are rotated so you might have to go looking a little bit but you will likely come across golden fields quickly enough if you drive around for a while.
Head off in your car, visit some pretty local towns, maybe spend some time at a nearby beach, grab some lunch, and stop at one of these amazing fields for a photo-op. Some farms will even allow visitors to pick some for a fee and for you to get closer. However, you should never stray directly onto land or pick any blooms without express consent to do so. Be sure to check! Or maybe you simply want to drive by and admire the sight as you soak up the beauty of the Tuscan countryside generally – it’s all up to you.

So, if you are considering a last minute vacation in Tuscany or you are planning a stay in one of our Tuscany Villas before the middle of next month or even a trip next summer with a stay in an amazing luxury villa in Tuscany using a holiday rental that offers our installment payment plan option, then be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this extraordinary sight!
