Once you arrive, be sure to seek out the Ponte Vecchio. Yes, you’ll likely see it from its prominent position along the Arno as you explore the city, you may even need to cross it, but it is not merely just some bridge but an iconic landmark and fascinating attraction all in its own right...

This architectural masterpiece spans the Arno River and can trace its origins to the Romans as it is located on the same spot where they are thought to have had a crossing for the important via Cassia route. Today’s bridge, however, dates back to the middle ages and was finished in 1345.
Along the length of the bridge, there is a row of shops and, for a long period, the association of butchers monopolised this commercial space. This was the case until the 16th century, when butchers were excluded and the bridge came under the exclusive occupancy of goldsmiths. The grand tradition of skilled goldsmiths and jewellers in the city was given a home here and the Ponte Vecchio remains a hub for talented artisans to this day.

Today, the Ponte Vecchio is a wonderful shopping area of the city, set in the stunning architectural surroundings of the ancient bridge with its impressive arches and hosting a dazzling array of jewellery shops as well as art galleries and quaint boutiques. This unique combination of charming aesthetics and bustling commerce creates an enchanting ambiance that draws visitors from near and far.
A stone’s throw from the iconic Uffizi Gallery and boasting amazing views of the Arno River and the picturesque cityscape, it is an unmissable part of the city for those who book one of our luxury villas in Florence.
