Dante Alghieri is, without a doubt, Italy’s best-known writer and a massive figure in the history of literature whose influence is still felt today. He is most famous for his epic, “Divine Comedy”, a trilogy and tale that brings readers through hell and purgatory before ending up in heaven. This work is one of the defining pieces of literature throughout history and is beloved by many around the world. For the most die-hard fans who are also looking to enjoy a getaway in Florence, a visit to the Museum of the House of Dante Alighieri is a must. Just book a luxury villa in Florence and come explore this extraordinary attraction and artist for yourself...

Located in a medieval building in which Alighieri was not actually born but, rather, in the area in which his family lived, the Museum of the House of Dante Alighieri can be found in the historic core of Florence, on the street of Santa Margherita, in the area between the Church of Saint Martino and the Piazza dei Donati. While it is not the very building in which the writer lived, it has been restored to maintain its contemporaneous looks from Dante’s lifetime in the 13th century.

Spread across three floors, the museum gives context of the time and explores the life and work of the artist. The first floor introduces us to Florence of the 13th century and discusses Dante’s early life into his early career. Then, on the second floor, we learn of his exile from Florence in 1301 and follow his travels to the various other cities and areas in which he lived until his death in 1321. On the final floor, we explore his work and legacy, with reproductions of famous works of art inspired by his writings including copies of pieces by the likes of Giotto, Beato Angelico, Andrea del Castagno, Ghirlandaio, Luca Signorelli, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Throughout the museum, both authentic documents and items are shown alongside reproductions from works of art, to items of clothing, to coins of the period.
For those interested in the life and work of Dante who have been considering booking a villa in Florence, this fascinating and informative museum should be definitely added to your itinerary of Tuscany!
