Reggello, sunflowers
Reggello, located about 35km southeast of Florence, in the metropolitan area, is nestled between the peaks of Pratomagno and the rolling valleys of the Val d'Arno and surrounded by the Vallombrosa Woods. As such, it is, unsurprisingly, incredibly scenic. A beloved destination of Florentines looking to escape the sizzling city during the hottest days of the summer, Reggello boasts a large area of preserved natural value and beauty that is ideal for those interested in outdoor pursuits. One of the best places for those who want to stretch their legs in a lovely setting is the Forest of Sant'Antonio, which is a stunning and protected forest with lots of walking and hiking routes on the western slope of the Pratomagno chain. Another Protected Nature Area of Local Interest nearby is the Balze, located in the Upper Valdarno. This is an area of canyons made up of fascinating geological structures formed by stratified sand, clay, and gravel, and makes for strikingly dramatic scenery that can be enjoyed while hiking. Reggello is also home to the Forest of Vallombrosa, a biogenetic nature reserve with endless conifer woods, an experimental arboretum with species from all over the world, lots of streams and springs, and hiking routes and itineraries to be undertaken on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback. If you're exploring the area between mid-July and mid-August be sure to also check out the fields of bobbing golden sunflowers that blanket the Valdarno area.
Sammezzano Castle, interior
Vallombrosa is, furthermore, forever connected to the monks of the homonymous Abbey that is set in peaceful seclusion among the firs and beech trees of the forest. Home to Benedictine monks and a Museum of Sacred Art, this fascinating building dates back to the 11th century, though it reflects later reconstruction and alterations. Having attracted famous writers and travellers in the past such as Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth, and Nietzsche, the abbey has inspired literature, boasts artworks by famous Renaissance artists, and has charming grounds. Another great architectural gem in the Reggello area is Sammezzano Castle, a true wonder built originally in the 17th century by a Spanish noble named Ximenes of Aragon and completely remodelled in the stunningly ornate Moorish Revival style in the 19th century. One of the most important examples of orientalist architecture in Italy and bursting with jaw-droppingly beautiful interiors, it was long closed to the public but can now be visited on special excursions. If you're lucky enough, you might be able to join one while holidaying in the region. In addition to these two most famous examples, however, the Reggello area abounds with churches, palaces, castles, and other architectural gems. If you have found a villa in Florence and are exploring the area, keep your eyes peeled as you go about the place as you never know what you might see!

Like most areas of Tuscany, Reggello has its own unique culinary specialties and is particularly famous for its extra virgin olive oil. The olive tree is a distinct characteristic of the countryside and groves can be seen dotted all over (as are vineyards). With particular organoleptic characteristics and low acidity due to the altitude, the temperate climate, and a kind of soil that is almost completely unique in Tuscany, the olive oil of the area is famously good and delicious. A member of the National Association of Olive Oil Cities, Reggello celebrates its, “green gold,” at the end of October and the beginning of November with the Rassegna dell'Olio Extravergine di Oliva (Olive Oil Festival). Marking the beginning of the oil season, the Piazza Aldo Moro becomes jammed with local producers at stands selling their oil before its full release, as well as other typical local products. If you're serious about your olive oil and you're a serious foodie, be sure to stock up on some oil while in Reggello and to visit this bustling culinary event if you are in the area while it is taking place.

So, if you have found a luxury villa in Florence and are looking to plan a day trip out of the city to escape the crowds, enjoy some fresh air and peace and quiet, take in some incredible natural beauty, see some exceptional architectural gems, and eat well, then be sure to plan a trip to Reggello!
