Villa Spoiano is a beautiful Renaissance villa that is now home to a farm, winery, and restaurant and is open to the public for visits. Located on a hillock between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Barberino Val d'Elsa, the first recorded mention of the building dates to 1689 and was made by San Jacopo a Magliano. Throughout the 17th century, the villa was likely a summer home owned by the De Nobili Family and was later owned by the Chiostri family in the 18th century. In 1934, it was purchased at auction by the Tinti Puccioni family and was then occupied by General Kesselring and his German soldiers during WWII, which led to bombing by the Allies, destroying part of the lookout tower and some of the original statuary in the gardens. The current owners are the Wäspi family, who bought Villa Spoiano in 1985 and under whom it became an organic farm producing wine and olive oil.
The building of Villa Spoiano itself is a major draw to this winery, in particular. A beautiful historic gem set amongst the rolling vineyard-covered hills and pastures of the Chianti countryside, the villa is made up of a large central building flanked by two wings and arranged around an open courtyard that faces to the south. Somewhat austere due to the minimal ornamentation and rather small windows that leave the façade mostly blank and little punctuated, it is made more romantic by the two asymmetrical flanking towers, one of which was the aforementioned lookout tower that had to be restored after WWII and another that acted as a dovecote.
In addition to being a historic looker, the villa is now a working farm and winery. Guided tours of the farm with wine and olive oil tastings take place every Friday at 10am but personalised tours and tastings with or without an added lunch option can be booked by calling +39 055 8077313 or sending them an email at spoiano@tin.it. Please ensure to check in and get confirmation before visiting, especially outside of the summer months, to verify that someone is available to facilitate your tour and tasting if you are organising for a private group.
One of the most appealing features of the estate on-site today is the organic restaurant in which typical Tuscan dishes made using organic produce grown on the farm and meat from their own Cinta Senese pigs and Dexter cows. The menu in the restaurant is, therefore, natural, organic, flavourful, seasonal, and more environmentally friendly. With a cosy ambience and delicious food, this charming little spot can also be booked for special dinners, lunches for groups, birthdays, celebrations, and more. Weddings can also be arranged and there is even a historic chapel on the property that was part of the original estate. Special four-course dinners are served on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. So, if you're planning a trip to Villa Spoiano and want to put some delicious food in your belly after tasting their wines, popping into the restaurant is incredibly handy! Open from April to October, you can call them at +39 055 8077313 to reserve your table.
So, if you are looking to taste some great wines, sample some Tuscan dishes made with the freshest of local produce, and do so in a scenic setting, think about planning a trip to Villa Spoiano while on holiday in Chianti!
