The island of Elba, off the Tuscan Coast, is already an exceptionally beautiful place. For those who have found a vacation rental on the Tuscan Coast, it is a must-see.
However, there is something that makes it even more incredible: a butterfly sanctuary that is part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park, in a natural oasis that stretches from the picnic area of Monte Perone and ends on the slopes of Monte Capanne.
However, there is something that makes it even more incredible: a butterfly sanctuary that is part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park, in a natural oasis that stretches from the picnic area of Monte Perone and ends on the slopes of Monte Capanne.
The sanctuary is made up of three areas: the first is inside a pine forest made up of artificial plants and an abundance of real flowers; there is a section of small fields covered in herbaceous plants, helichrysum and junipers; and a final area that is a forest of Mediterranean scrub. Each of these areas attracts different types and species of butterflies, with Zerinzia, Pieride of Mann and Pironia found in the first section, Elban butterflies in the fields and Giasone butterflies in the final area. A theme trail, dotted with signs that explain everything and the butterflies you might find, in particular, winds through the sections and guides you along your way.
Created in honour of the naturalist Ornella Casnati, it has been an important example of environmental biodiversity since 2009. The area was financed by a joint ENEL and Legambiente project and was made possible by a collaboration between Leonardo Dapporto, Angelino Carta, Umberto Mazzantini and the National Park.
There are over fifty species that can be found in total over the whole area and it has been described as a “Sistine Chapel”. Full of colour, beautiful views, stunning plants and plenty of butterflies, it is a truly magical place. Just head to the Monte Perone picnic area, walk along path number 5, continuing for about 2 kilometres and try to spot all the butterflies as you make your way along.
If you are exploring Elba, a visit is a must!
