The fortress in which is is housed is a historic and important building that was begun in 1361 to improve the fortifications of the city. It was important as a symbol of Sienese power and key to political and military struggles over the years but lost all military function by the 17th century. It then served various functions for the town and eventually became home to one of the world's finest wine shops, the Enoteca La Fortezza.
