Tuscany is one of the ultimate foodie destinations in the world where food is at the centre of the culture, it is fresh and simple, tasty and wholesome, one doesn't have to spend a lot to eat well, and there is a year-long calendar of food-related events that take place all throughout the region. You could find a perfect villa in Tuscany and spend your whole trip visiting different towns, trying different specialities and attending different food festivals. One of the big-hitters, however, is Boccaccesca, and annual food and wine street festival in the lovely medieval town of Certaldo Alto, on Via Boccaccio.
Named for the famous medieval poet, Giovanni Boccaccio, who was born 700 years ago in Certaldo, this festival takes place from the 5th to the 7th of October this year. Boccaccesca sees the street fill with stalls manned by locals selling the very best and freshest products from the area. Dishes like ribollita soup, Tuscan game, hare, deer, wild boar, thick steaks, fresh breads and typical cakes and sweets will all be served and available to sample during the event. Tastings of Tuscan wines like Chianti Classico or Brunello of Montalcino will also take place and renowned sommeliers will be in attendance to help visitors to choose and appreciate the right wines for them.
Furthermore, there will be cooking competitions and demonstrations by famous Italian chefs, medieval reenactments, entertainment for kids will also be provided.
Best of all, it is inexpensive! The festival costs five euro to enter and a glass of wine with limitless refills is another five euro and the local cheeses, cured meats, olives, snacks, dishes and desserts are sold at competitive prices. For great food at bargain rates, a charming setting and fun celebration, it is an ideal activity to engage in while in Tuscany this October!
