How To Stay Cool In Florence This Summer II

San Marco
As we mentioned in the last post, temperatures can soar in Florence in the summer and, in a big city full of tourists, wandering around can become particularly uncomfortable. If you have found a luxury villa in Florence and are planning a trip there this summer, you may have to deal with beating the heat so we have compiled some tips to help keep you cool.

3. Visit a Church

Popping into a church is a great way to cool down and get out of the sun for a bit but you may want to avoid one with long lines and big tourist crowds. There are plenty of smaller, less famous but beautiful churches to discover around the city and these will offer you cool interiors to get away from the heat, while enjoying the art and history. Just be sure to have a sweater to cover bear shoulders or wrap around your waist if you are wearing shorts.
St Antoninus
One good example of a church to visit is the lovely Dominican Church of San Marco. Considered something of a shrine to the Dominican order, it is home to a large number of paintings by the great Dominican artist, Fra Angelico. It is also fascinating as it is home to the 550 year-old mummified relic of St. Antoninus, dressed in his ornate archbishop’s garb and resting in a glass coffin. His body is remarkably (and somewhat alarmingly) well preserved and has never decayed or even become discoloured.

4. Find a pool

If you are staying in Florence itself, you may not have a pool in your property (though many of our rentals in Florence and its surroundings do have their own pools!) and nothing is better to help you cool down than a swim. There are several public pools in Florence to choose from, however, so fear not!
Pool
Le Pavoniere is a pool located in the largest park of the city, Cascine Park, and boasts a poolside bar, restaurant, pizzeria and a smaller pool perfect for children. In the evening, it becomes a club. An entire day costs 8 euro during the weekdays and 10 euros on the weekends and is open Monday through Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm, and from 8 pm to midnight every day except Thursday and Sunday.

Another good pool is the Piscina Comunale Costoli, which is the biggest and best-equipped pool center in Florence, with an Olympic pool and a smaller one for kids and adults. Located near the Artemio Franchi Stadium, it also has a snack bar. Entry is €8 for adults and €5 if you enter after 3pm and it is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 6pm, until 8pm on Thursdays and Saturdays and from 2-6pm on Mondays.
