Art To Welcome You At The Airport In Pisa

Park Eun Sun's work at the airport in Florence
If you have found the perfect luxury villa in Pisa for you and yours and are flying into the city in the next few months, there will be quite the warm welcome waiting for you.

Sculptural works by the Italian-based South Korean artist Park Eun Sun have been specially installed and are located on the grounds of the Galileo Galilei airport and will be the first works of art to greet you upon reaching one of Tuscany's most important art centres as part of the VolareArte initiative.

You might spend your trip visiting museums and galleries, wandering churches, palaces, leaning towers and other architectural gems, and paying entrance fees and lining up but these pieces will await you without requiring any effort on your part.
Pisa
Park is a celebrated and internationally recognised Korean artist and long-time resident of Versilia, who first came to the country in order to work with the same Apuane marbles that had so inspired Michelangelo centuries ago and from which he had pulled beings that were “trapped”.

He has been working in Pietrasanta, Italy since 1993 and produces works that are exceptionally pure geometric forms composed of slabs of marble in two different shades and further ornamented through the use of cracks and cut-outs.

Park's work first attracted attention at the group exhibition, “Mostra di scultura in omaggio a SEM” held by Pietrasanta in 1997. Since then he has had many other group exhibitions, as well as solo showcases, across Europe in the likes of Italy, Germany and France, among others. In 2009, he won the Sun Gallery prize.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
The initiative is the third of this kind to be organised by the Henraux Foundation, together with Tuscany Airports and sees a collection of 9 sculptures from Park Eun Sun grace the Pisa airport. The Henraux foundation was set up in memory of Erminio Cidonio, who launched the company’s art studios back in the ’50s and ’60s and saw the company collaborate with artists such as Henry Moore, Miro, Arp, Noguchi, Vantongerloo, Penalba, Gilioli and Poncet, and aims to support international artists and designers working with marble as a material. This year, Park Eun Sun, a particular favourite of Henraux CEO, Paolo Carli, was chosen to work with the foundation and it is the works of this contemporary artist that await to welcome you upon arrival in the city. The works will be on display until the 27th of May 2017 and, for art-lovers flying in to this part of Tuscany, it is a particular and unexpected treat.
