2015 - The Year Of Archaeology In Tuscany

MAEC, Cortona
2015 is the Year of Archaeology in Tuscany. This basically means that for the next few months major and minor museums around Tuscany will be putting on special exhibits and organising special events in order to promote the archaeological heritage of the region. If you are a history fanatic, you may want to find yourself a luxury villa in the area and experience the celebration of archaeological discovery for yourself.

The event which opens the year's events schedule is an exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Launched on March 14th and continuing through to June 21st, it is entitled “Power and Pathos - Bronze sculpture of the Hellenistic world.”
National Archaeological Museum, Florence
The exhibition features bronze sculptures from the Hellenistic era and is the result of prestigious collaborations between the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Tuscany. Works are on loan from some of the most important museums in the world such as the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. There are around fifty works on show and it is a rare opportunity to see a collection of magnificent objects in one room that may have never been together before and may never be within such proximity of each other again.

There are also lots of events and activities taking place in conjunction with the exhibition, particularly for children, so it's a chance to engage with art in new and exciting ways.

Other events include a similar exhibition at the nearby National Archaeological Museum of Florence called “Small, great bronze. Greek, Etruscan and Roman masterpieces of the Medici-Lorraine collection”. This exhibition is open from March 20 to June 21 and displays the extraordinary collection of bronze statuettes collected over three centuries by the Medici and Lorraine dynasties. Though smaller in scale than the “Power and Pathos” pieces, these are equally fascinating.

The Amico Museo and Nights of Archaeology programmes will also be taking place in May and July respectively offering guided tours, special exhibitions, events, workshops for children and more. Furthermore, 2015 is also the tenth anniversary of the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the city of Cortona. In order to celebrate this anniversary, the museum will reorganise and revitalise its installations and organize a series of exhibitions and events.

In summary, there is plenty for the amateur archaeologist to be getting up to in Tuscany this summer in addition to everything else the region has to offer. Won't you see for yourself?
