Lazing away on a beach is not quite everyone's idea of a perfect holiday, some prefer to remain active, not allow fitness slip and to venture out and see more of the area that they are visiting. If you happen to fall into the above category, you might consider finding a luxury villa in Chianti and heading over for the Chianti Eco-marathon in 2016. This annual event combines several aspects which are appealing to proud locals and visitors alike – the beautiful Tuscan landscape, nature, sport, running and food. Taking place in the second half of October, there are several different levels and types of trails so that you can find the perfect one for your level of fitness or holiday preferences.

There are six of these trails, in total. They are; the Eco-marathon, which measures 42km; the Chianti Classic Trail, which is 21km in length; the Lucca Trail, at 14km; the Eco-promenade, at 10km; the Wineries Walk, at 8km and the Nordic Walking, at 11km.
The Eco-marathon, at 42km, is the longest of all the races and it takes a winding route right through the Sienese Hills.
It is, therefore, the most challenging but rewards those who undertake it with the amazing scenery and views that you will take in along the way.

The Classic Chianti Trail is only half the length of the Eco-marathon at 21 km. New this year, it is a good compromise for those who wish to challenge themselves but find the idea of the full marathon a little intimidating. It is also a very pretty route, taking you through the unique landscapes of Siena and the Val d’Orcia as well as the Chianti area.
The Lucca trail is shorter again and rather simple. The Eco-Promenade, however, is of particular interest to those who also have a fondness for the natural environment of the area as it takes you through vineyards, cypresses and olive groves.
The Wineries Walk, is for the food and wine lovers of the world and takes you though some of the most important agricultural areas in Chianti, allowing you to taste wine and traditional Tuscan cuisine before ending in a traditional market.
With so many different trails, there really is something for everyone – you don't have to be a professional athlete or anything close! This is also a really good way to properly explore the Chianti area in a unique and interesting manner. Maybe it's something to consider if you're looking for a more active holiday next year.
