If you happen to be in Siena on the 2nd of July or the 16th of August then you’re in for a treat! The famous Palio of Siena takes place; a thrilling horseracing event that takes place right in the historic centre!
Throughout the rest of the year, tourists flock to see amazing ancient buildings and monuments in the old centre of the city such as the majestic 12th century cathedral. This ancient building is one of the finest examples of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in all of Italy and is truly a soothing sight for sore eyes!

Inside are lots of well-preserved decorative frescoes by Renaissance master painter, Domenico Ghirlandaio and sculptures by Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti.
The city’s central square, shaped like a shell is called Piazza del Campo and is bordered by two other architectural treasures called Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia. The city’s main art museum is located in the public palace, open for tourists to browse around as they please.
Take a few glorious hours to walk around other notable buildings such as the Gothic Palazzo Chigi and a stunning botanical garden contained within the grounds of the University of Siena.
