Alabaster is a smooth fine grained sedimentary rock that is white, finely shaded or translucent in colour. It’s easy to carve and even a sculpture of which the thickness is up to two inches, light can still shine through and create a stunning effect.

The Alabaster mines around Volterra houses over 300 sculpted artworks, carved between the 18th and 19th centuries.

The museum itself was a former convent and also displays a superb collection of antiques, ceramics and paintings for tourists to admire.
