Home to a majestic Baroque designed cathedral with an intricate Neoclassical exterior, this town has much to offer in terms of admirable architecture, art collections and history.

Other beautiful churches in the town and surrounding area are decorated in many styles and house exquisite works. In the Church of San Francesco, tourists can see a magnificent artwork by the well known artist, Agostino di Duccio dating from the 15th century.

Why not stay in a beautiful villa near La Spezia city, only forty kilometres south west of Pontremoli? It offers magnificent views of the sea and would be the perfect place to relax and unwind after a few days of tourist explorations!
Magra river
Pontremoli literally translates as ‘Trembling Bridge’, named after the bridge nearby that crosses the large Magra River.

This picturesque town sits in the upper Magra Valley and offers spectacular views no matter which direction you turn your head! Pontremoli is easily travelled for a day trip and offers lots for visitors to do and see!

Visit the Museo delle Statue Stele in Castello del Piagnaro, a well preserved ancient fortress which has a superb history in itself. This museum’s collection displays unusual human shaped carvings from stone that were found in the local area.

Fancy a coffee break in the afternoon? Why not sit down in the town square to a steaming cup of strong coffee along with a tasty local treat called ‘amor’. This is a wafer lined with a creamy filling in between each one...it’s absolutely delicious! Or if you’re visiting in the winter months, you will get to try a tasty local Christmas cake made with chocolate, honey and hazelnuts!
Local testaroli dish
An unusual pasta dish called Testaroli is very popular here. It’s an oven baked flat pasta, cut into squares and tossed in a pan with olive oil, pesto and herbs before being served with a grating of pecorino or parmesan on top.

It’s a superb Slow Food delicacy to be enjoyed along with a tasty glass of local wine in the cool evening.

If you’re lucky enough to be here during October, you’ll get to witness the popular ‘Mushroom and Chestnut’ festival where you can sample these local treats and savour lots of local dishes.

So why not add the town of Pontremoli to your list of places to visit on your next vacation to Tuscany? You most certainly won’t regret it!
