Explore The Fascinating Roman Sites Of Tuscany

Explore the four main Roman sites in Tuscany that still have very well preserved remains of the dominant Roman civilisation. Start off your Roman adventure in the Tuscan city of Siena; first settled by the Etruscans and then brought under Roman rule.

Stay in a lovely vacation rental in Siena where you can travel around its many attractions with ease. Siena didn't initially thrive during this time because of its poor connections to major trade routes but the city itself still holds onto many beautiful old buildings and monuments erected during Roman reign.

Artefacts and buildings dating back to Roman times can also be explored in Colle Val d’Elsa in Siena province. Tourists will enjoy a visit to an informative archaeological museum here as well as walking through some of the cave-like necropolises here open to tourists.

There are some beautifully preserved Roman sites at Fiesole town in Florence province. The outdoor Roman amphitheatre here is still in use today and visitors can walks around the few remaining walls of what were Roman bath buildings. Some of the ancient town walls dating further back to the Etruscan period can be seen also.

Lucca city became an important Roman colony around 180 BC. As with many major Roman cities and owns, Lucca was first founded by the Etruscans. Its historic centre is rectangular in shape, honouring the traditional Roman street map plan and traces of a Roman amphitheatre can be seen in the main oval square called Piazza dell ‘Anfiteatro.

Cosa in south-western Tuscany is now a major tourist attraction. Located close to the lagoon town of Orbetello, Cosa is an ancient Roman town where tourists can walk around remains of buildings here such as sacred temples, bath houses, private houses and the forum which would have been the town’s public square.
