Sandro Botticelli was born Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi in 1445 and went on to become a master painter of the Renaissance. Although there are very few details of his personal life, he has left behind a colourful array of artwork that leaves no doubt in the minds of art experts that he was a genius at creating realistic portraits and scenes.
He had a very distinctive style, choosing to paint in low relief and draw clear contours in his characters, adding plenty of colour.

He worked from a young age in his father’s goldsmith business and was nickname ‘Ghirlandaio’ meaning ‘garland maker’ as his speciality was making garland necklaces that Florentine women frequently wore in those times.

Visitors can walk around scenes from the life of St. Francis and detailed scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Ghirlandaio had a wonderful talent for creating realistic and beautifully detailed art and used his experience to teach apprentices when he established his famous workshop. His most famous student was in fact, Michelangelo Buonarotti who learned a lot from his experienced master!
