The Sunny Etruscan Coastline, A Seaside Heaven!

View of Populonia and Gulf of Baratti
To gain a perfect perspective of the beauty of Italy’s coastline, a holiday along the coast of Tuscany will fill any visitor’s heart with a sense of awe and admiration for its beautifully preserved beaches and coastal towns.

Much of the land layouts, building designs and winding roads have stayed true to the times when the ancient civilisation, the Etruscans built a prosperous environment for themselves between 800BC AND 390BC.

The Etruscan coastline could be described as a heaven for the senses!

Anyone who gazes out onto the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean and breathes in the salty smell of the coast can fully appreciate the lengths that the Tuscan people go to protect their environment from pollution. As they turn to face the land, they’ll be greeted by the sight of prosperous growth of juicy green and black olives, ripening fruit and colourful fields packed with grains and vegetables bathing in the warm sunlight. The bouquet of smells wafting from the sea and land is like a tonic for the soul!
Coast of Livorno
Where else could be closer to paradise than finding the perfect spot to sunbathe along one of many beaches stretched across the ‘Costa delgi Etruschi’? Many scenic towns are scattered across the coastline like Carducci, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima which provide everything you could need to create the perfect holiday. Why not delve into the Etruscan way of life by enjoying a delicious glass of local red wine first made by them known as ‘Sassicaia’ along with a tasty plate of freshly steamed shellfish as you sit out in the sunlight overlooking the sparkling turquoise sea? The nearby islands of Elba and Capraia are very popular holiday spots for the Italians and you can be sure of a truly authentic Etruscan cultural experience there.

Barely anything has changed over the centuries here; many of the towns and villages along the coastline were enveloped in fortified walls by the Etruscan people and over eighty kilometres of beaches, pinewoods and cliffs mark a line between a beautiful sea and a beautiful land. Tourists can enjoy visits to many natural parks and animal reservation areas that protect and help local species of animal and flora thrive as well as they did in the Etruscan period.
The seaside town of Populonia, situated on a hilltop is well worth a visit. This was a town that once specialised in smelting iron and was surrounded by strong medieval walls to protect the townspeople from pirate attacks!
Beach of Castiglioncello
Livorno is a cultural paradise for any tourists wanting to soak in an Italian melody of foods, art and customs. It is a crossroads of different types of people and cultures and has become a happy home for many artists. The essence of Etruscan living has remained strong here and is an enjoyable place to visit for great food and sightseeing.

The spectacular town of San Vicenzo, surrounded by luscious greenery is a popular seaside resort with lots of amenities to keep any people holidaying here wholly entertained. It’s the perfect spot for any who enjoys water sports and land activities. It’s also close to many historical Etruscan archaeological sites and major Tuscan towns.

The seaside resort of Castiglioncello is the perfect example of how the Etruscan people manipulated the sun, sea, air and land and even what lay beneath it to their advantage. The hills and valleys are blossoming with vegetation. The nearby mines in the Fucinaia Valley gave the local people great wealth by exporting it. They used every source available to them but without exploiting it to the point of destruction. That’s what makes this coastline so special; it shows what the Etruscans did to make their living but also how they knew to give back what they got by replanting seeds, preserving animal and fish stocks with intelligent planning and by perfectly preserving the beauty of nature and allowing it to thrive.
