Although this romantic walk isn’t in Tuscany, it’s so close to the northern Tuscan border that you both could easily enjoy a day trip to Liguria and walk along a path where many couples first met. It’s called Via dell’Amore and is located along the coast. These two towns were relatively isolated until the last century, where young people generally married partners from their own towns. However in the 1920’s a trail was built between the two communes and teenagers began meeting with their peers from the other town and used the trail as a meeting point. This connection was popular with the townsfolk and work was done to improve it over the years.
Couples will learn when they come here about how the path was often blocked with continuously landslides but after World War II, it was permanently fixed and became well known as a lover’s meeting point from then on.
You will see many padlocks along the way fixed onto the railings with initials of couples who have been here. This became a huge craze in Italy and around the world after a famous romantic book series became a huge bestseller which described the idea of sealing a couple’s love by symbolising it with a lock and throwing away the key! If you and your partner would like to leave your mark here, there’s a prosperous hardware store nearby that will only be too happy to sell you one. It’s a lovely idea to think of your lock remaining there long after you come home and reflect on your romantic memories of Via dell’Amore!
