The history of this fascinating region dates back as far as Paleolithic times. A ligurian tribe called the ‘Magelli’ settled here in those times and prospered. This is where the name Mugello derives. Visitors can see many of the monumental remains of the Etruscan civilisation lived here for centuries on top of hills in Vicchio and Dicomano. During the second century, the Romans invaded Tuscany and seized control of this region. Many artefacts from Roman times were discovered in Mugello and are now on display in museums across the area.
The Mugello area is brimming with castles and villas, mainly because the powerful Medici Family, who ruled most of Florence and sponsored many Renaissance movements, were originally from here. Many tourists have flocked to see the magnificent Villa Demidoff and its surrounding gardens in Vaglia. Especially worth seeing is the decorative Fountain of the Appennine here. Nearby, there is a hill that visitors walk up to the Convent of Monte Senario where you can be amazed at the majestic views of the entire Mugello area.
