Come and visit the perfect example of an authentic small Tuscan town, Casole d’Elsa which has earned the prestigious Orange Flag Award for being a fantastic tourist attraction and an environment of relatively undisturbed beauty. Visitors have a wealth of beautiful villas with guest reviews and other holiday rental accommodation available to them in the Casole d’Elsa area where they can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

While entering the town for a day of exciting exploration, tourists will see the some of the remaining walls and two watch towers surrounding it that were designed by the famous military architect, Francesco di Giorgio in the 15th century.

Within the town square is a superb rectory museum full of sacred art paintings and archaeology artefacts to admire. Nearby is the Rocca building, a majestic quadrangular structure with two massive towers situated in Piazza della Libertà. You can see some of the well preserved arrow slits that were once used to fend off attackers when the town was under siege!

This unusual pear shaped town is surrounded by the most beautiful fields of red and yellow flowers, especially during the months of May and June and can be fully appreciated when tourists climb to heights in the town to gaze over them during the day and especially during a Tuscan sunset.

At night, in June, the ripening wheat fields attract fireflies and provide visitors with a magnificent dancing light display; it truly transforms Casole d’Elsa into a magical place!

Tourists would thoroughly enjoy a trip to both Romanesque churches in the town. The church of Santa Maria dates back to 1161 and contains many works of art including the sculpture ‘Tombs of Beltramo Aringhieri’ a gothic masterpiece by Marco Romano dating from the 14th century. The parish church of St. John the Baptists houses tremendous sculptures that illustrate many stories from the bible dating from the 12th century that is sure to fascinate onlookers.

Tourists should spend an afternoon in the gorgeous woodlands surrounding the Merse River only a few minutes’ walk from the town. It’s a lovely place to enjoy a picnic or a peaceful woodland walk. The ‘Selva di Sogno’ sculpture park in a nearby oak woodland is designed by a famous German sculpture called Deva Manfredo. Tourists can walk around a bizarre wonderland of artistic light installations merged with the oak trees. It’s especially eerie yet beautiful under a moonlit night!

On the first Sunday of July, the popular Palio di Casole is held for a week in Casale Val d’Elsa. It’s a horse racing event that includes six jockeys and horses from six districts of the town that race each other along a straight stretch rather than the usual oval racetrack. Visitors can enjoy browsing around an antique market the following morning, followed by a colourful parade and that night, a stunning fireworks display!

The wonderful town of Casole Val d’Elsa would be an excellent addition to your holiday; it has everything here to create many happy memories of your Tuscan holiday!
