In the corner of Tuscany lies the charming medieval town of Anghiari where visitors can delight in the historical, cultural and picturesque riches that they’ll find in this treasured place. Anghiari was of extreme importance during the Middle Ages because of its strategic position in the hills. The famous Battle of Anghiari took place here in 1440 when Florentine troops, in alliance with the Pope, defeated the Milan army to win control of the region.

Tourists would enjoy a worthwhile visit to the castle of Montauto, which was partly in existence during Etruscan times. The lookout tower was first built when the local copper mines were being excavated and a castle was later built around it during the late 12th century. St. Francis of Assisi often stopped here to rest from his journeys to and from La Verna.
One of Anghiari’s most revered sites is just a short distance from the town at a place where St. Francis made a wooden cross from branches he found and placed it at a crossroads. It’s called Borgo della Croce. A chapel was built on this site in his honour, and later a convent. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful architectural interior and coloured frescoed walls.
There are many quaint restaurants and cafes to enjoy a delicious lunch. Visitors should try the local Chianina beef, or ‘Rasagnolo’, a tasty homemade pasta served with hare, duck or mushroom sauce with a glass of wine for an exquisite dining experience.

Tourists can enjoy walking around a popular craft fair between late April and Early May. Anghiari is most famous for its cloth trade, woven from sheep’s wool or local hemp, a fibrous plant. The Busatti family from the Valdarno invested in this thriving trade in the late 18th century and today, the Busatti brand has become a worldwide brand!
