Pitigliano is built on a large mountain rock and dates back as far as Etruscan times. Visitors can climb up the volcanic mountain behind the town where ancient Etruscan grave stones have been carved into the rock. Pitigliano is surrounded by three rivers which helped in the town’s defences when, in Medieval times, provinces like Florence and Siena fought fiercely to siege control of small communities.
Nearby is the famous Lake Bolsena, which is a massive water filled crater and is also Europe’s largest volcanic lake! Visitors would thoroughly enjoy a few hours here where a delicious picnic could be enjoyed along the shoreline or why not hire a boat to row across its calm waters?
Back in the town, there’s a fascinating museum here dedicated to describing the history of the Jewish population in Pitigliano.
