
In the southern area of Tuscany in the province of Siena, there is a stunning mountainous place called Mount Amiata. It faces the scenic Val d’Orcia on the northeast and the Maremma region on the eastern side. Tourists wishing to stay here for a few days have a lovely choice of accommodation. This is a land famous for its chestnuts and mushrooms and tourists are sure to find some cosy eateries around here that serve mouth-watering dishes based around these lovely ingredients. Try the local wild boar or lamb ‘Buglioni’ along with a nice bottle of red wine that has received many popular reviews from travellers that have visited the Mount Amiata region.
Why not embark on a hiking trail through the trickling streams, chestnut forests and cosy little hamlets tucked into the mountainous area. It is also home to what was once a huge mining district. There’s a superb museum dedicated to the mining history of what was one of the most important mercury mines in the world!

The steaming hot springs are heated by the geothermal activity that still exists under the earth because of the once active Mount Amiata.

Experience walking along a section of the famous Via Francigena which passes by the foot of the mountain. Travel along Via Cassia and admire a stunning view of the old Abbey of San Salvatore. There is an entertaining festival held near the abbey in July that’s well worth a visit.
