Those looking for a hidden gem off the beaten tourist path will appreciate the quaint charms and Etruscan ruins of Sovana.
This tiny dot on the map is located in the heart of southern Tuscany, known for its sparse landscape with rolling hills and fields. Sovana is a beautifully preserved small town, filled with a rich history inside of its medieval architecture.

This architecture is perfectly preserved, which you can't help but notice as you stroll down the main street and take in the gorgeous luxury villas and central square. The town is Etruscan in origin, before being taken over by the Romans and later the Lombards.

Near Sovana lies the Tomb Ildebranda, the largest Etruscan mausoleum that has been found to date. It was decorated with 12 columns, and contained two imposing stone staircases as well as one underground leading to the internal funerary chamber.

In the middle ages, Sovana was known as Soana, leading to the name that it is called today. There are numerous sites to explore in addition to the tomb mentioned above.

The Aldobrandeschi Castle was built over an ancient Etruscan fortress, with the current appearance dating back to 1572. The tower, portal, and walls remain of this impressive ancient fortress.

In the center of Sovana, you can sit in the Palazzo Pretorio, dating back to the 13th century, or the Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, built during the Late Renaissance, and have a cup of coffee while watching the slow pace of life in this leisurely ancient village.

There are two interesting churches to tour, including the Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses an intriguingly decorate cathedral built in the 11th century.

The Church of San Mamiliano is the most ancient church in the village, with a recently found treasure trove of ancient gold coins dating back to the Roman era.
