The Boboli Gardens
The Boboli Gardens is to Florence what Hyde Park is to London
- but with no ruling monarchy in Italy it can't be called a Royal Park.
It offers some spectacular panorama's, and for those that can brave the
summer heat, the chance to look down onto Florence on one side, and onto
the houses of the very rich, and probably famous, on the other.
The Boboli gardens can be found hidden behind the imposing facade of
Palazzo Pitti, three minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio. Its grounds
feature a series of Roman sculptures and other artistic works as well as
a beautiful Roman lake.
The garden was bought in 1550 by Eleonora di Toledo from the Pitti
family. Through the ages the garden has suffered and flourished in
keeping with the history of the town of Florence. It was not until the
19th Century that the garden provided a backdrop for open-air
entertainment. In recent years, the grounds are used to host operatic
concerts.
