History of Vallombrosa Abbey

Approximately 30 KM to the south-east of Florence lies the Benedictine Abbey of Vallombrosa. Founded by Giovanni Gaulberto, in 1038 by a Florentine noble, and which became the house of the Vallombrosan Order.
The abbey itself was extended in the 1450s, reaching its current size at the end of the 15th century. In 1529, after the looting of Charles V, the east tower was built, in the 17th century followed the wall and in the 18th century the fishing ponds. Today, the monastery is open for tourists and also sells locally produced gifts. Mentioned by the poet, John Milton in Paradise Lost - 'autumnal leaves that strow the brooks, in Vallombrosa' - it is more than likely that Milton inspired other travellers, such as, JR Cozens, William Wordsworth and Mary Shelley to visit in later years.

When to Visit

In the Winter months, expect to find snow on the roads leading to the Abbey and hardened trekkers out in the woods enjoying the fine clear air. In the summer months (the busiest time) many locals visit Valombrosa to escape the heat of Florence. There is a large open field directly in front of the Abbey, making it the perfect place to have a summer picnics, or just to take some time out of the city.

Where to Eat

If you'd prefer to eat in a restaurant we recommend the "Santa Caterina" Restaurant. Its specialties are Grigliata (grilled meats cooked on the spit) and their Ravioli with Butter and Sage is out of this world. This is proper Tuscan food! At the wekeend, don't just turn up hoping to get a table as you'll need to book the evening before.
