Associazione Italiana Persone Down
First organized in Rome in 1979 under the name Association for Children Down, the AIPD is a point of reference for families and social, health and education workers on all issues related to Down syndrome. Its purpose is to protect the rights of people with Down syndrome, encourage their full physical and mental development, contribute to their educational and social inclusion at all levels, to raise awareness about their actual capacity and to disseminate knowledge about the syndrome. The Italian Association of People Down has 43 sections throughout the country and is composed primarily of parents and people with this syndrome. In 2012 the Arezzo section of the AIPD ,in addition to all the great work they do year-round, organized a program to grow organic vegetables and produce that is sold locally. This program helps both Downs syndrome and mentally disable people who actively participate in the activities on the farm. Funded 50% by the regional government and 50% with funds raised by the AIPD section in Arezzo.

At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners every day. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends now cares for more than 120 horses across three states, most of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A “living history museum of horse racing”, the farm attracts nearly 20,000 tourists annually that get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders’ Cup Champion Gulch, stakes winner Marquetry, Eclipse-Award winner Sunshine Forever, Whitney Handicap Winner Commentator, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and…the losingest horse in the history of racing, Zippy Chippy.
